What NOT to do in your SEO Strategy
While a lot is said about what to do when it comes to SEO tips and tricks, there is also quite a bit to talk of what should NOT be done in the world of Search Engines. There are websites that are genuine and have earned their worth to be ranked at the top of search results. These are organic results that search engines generate as they scroll through millions of pages that they have painstakingly indexed in their complex search algorithms. However, organisations, in their enthusiasm to make the most of their websites, indulge in unhealthy practices that are categorised by the industry as “Black Hat” tricks.
The Back Hat: Search Engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo virtually detest such attempts at trying to mislead search engine spiders to rank the tricksters among the genuine sites that are listed. Search engines, when they find out about these black hat tricks (and they do find out), deal with these websites in kind – they black list the sites from search engine results and search engines would no longer index these sites. In effect, search engines would eliminate the sites from their list and there is no way that these sites can hope to appear among search results again. If you do not want such a catastrophe for your website, you would have to take note of some of the black hat tricks that you should actively avoid.
Do not over-do with your keywords: Keywords are used to indicate to search engines that your site has stuff that may be relevant to the search terms used by users. You are legitimately allowed and expected to include keywords in your websites so that search engines do find you and display your site among search results. However, you should be reasonable and appropriate in use of keywords. Excessive use of keywords that may actually be irrelevant to the contents in your site would definitely be sniffed by search engines and they would be pissed off big time. You wouldn’t want your new website to fall victim to your misadventure.
Do not employ “Hidden Contents”: While you can have a lot of content hidden by covering them up using background colour, as a means to attract web spiders, this is unethical and again, search engines are getting smarter by the day.
Do not use Getaway pages: Getaway pages are those created with the sole purpose of attracting search engines. When readers click on these results, they are redirected to another website that may not be relevant to the searched content at all. If you do that, you would be blacklisted for sure.
The rule for a good SEO strategy is simple: Play it right, Play it straight.
