SEO Tips – Dealing with Black Hat
It is sometimes tempting to try the tricks that your competitor so efficiently uses to overtake your work. You work so hard at reaching your goals and you end up being a victim of your own making. Yes, I’m talking of Black Hat. Black Hat is a trick that those who want fame the short cut way use to trick themselves into the fast lane, real fast. And people in the trade know how to do it. So, what are Black Hats?
For starters, Black Hat tricks do exist and they do work – in the short term. Black Hat is like breaking into a bank’s system and getting out all you can – it definitely works. But then, obviously, it is not legal. And more importantly, you get caught. Black Hat is the trick that makes search engines believe that your site is genuine and you deserve high page ranks. It could be with any number of tricks, such as buying backlinks or having a phoney site that captures all the keywords that are in demand. In short, Search Engines tend to believe that your site is genuine and hence put you up the search results. Is that not what SEO is all about – getting to the top of page results to ensure maximum exposure for your site?
But then, you are being watched. Whatever you do, you leave a trail behind – and you can keep doing some dirty stuff only as long as you do not get caught red-handed. And Search Engines are real tough when dealing with Black Hat – you get caught and you are banished for ever from Search results.
As a responsible blogger, what are you supposed to do to counter the dirty tricks?
1. Watch out for Plagiarism: As long as you are genuine, you should keep looking out for sites that may have conveniently picked up content from your site and pasted them out there. Do some checks – Copyscape is a good way to spot the content pickers.
2. Report Black Hat: Be proactive and report any wrongdoings that you find on the web. If you know sites that sell backlinks, report them to search engines. Even if you yourself may not be affected immediately, in the long run, you may also be targeted by the sites that you let go.
3. Be good: Never give in to temptations. Work your way up the ladder and stay on top honestly. If you resort to the easy way, remember: Google is much smarter that what you are!
