5 Tips to make your Website Searchable

After you have got your contents ready and before you can optimise your site for search engines, you need to make sure that your site is accessible by search engines. Unless your site can be accessed by search engines, the best sites wouldn’t serve the business purpose.  So, what should you do to make your website searchable?

1. Submit your site to search engines: This is the basic step you need to take. You can target the popular search engines – Google, Bing and Yahoo – and submit your site to them. You could submit your site to Google, Yahoo and Bing.

2. Get your site up and wait for Search Engines to find you: Even if you do not submit your website to search engines, you still have an option – all you have to do is to wait. Search Engines regularly index the web for new websites as well as for websites that have been changed or revised. It is very much likely that your site would be spotted by search engines during their indexing. Of course, you have to be patient for this.

3. Do not prevent the search engines from indexing you: Spammers as well as search engines rely on Search Robots or Spiders or web crawlers to index websites. Since search engines as well as spammers do similar processes in finding out websites, make sure you do not turn off these search robots using the Robots Exclusion protocol. This can normally be done using a robot.txt file, which is used to give instructions to Search Bots. While the effectiveness of these robot.txt files is being questioned, there is no reason why you should mess around with search engine spiders when you want your site to feature in search results.

4. Make your content Machine-readable using text: If you are a wizard with Flash and videos, it doesn’t give you the license to fill your site with flash, images or videos, if you want to be visible to search engines. Remember: Search spiders know only text and they don’t see images or watch videos. Even if you have images, use ALT Attributes along with images to make them machine readable.

5. Have clear Internal Linking and Page Designs: Spend a lot of time in making sure your website makes sense with all its pages and sub-pages. Have them properly linked; get all the relevant and most important topics and stuff on to your front page. Have a proper layout with a sitemap that explains what your website is; make sure all your links work properly and sequentially. Once you are done with it, you can expect your website to be indexed by search engine bots.
